UDFA 2: C Drake Nugent

One of the many maulers on the 2024 college football national champion Michigan Wolverines, center Drake Nugent has an uphill battle to climb compared to any other player. Offensive lineplay in the NFL is far more advanced than in college, even in a pro-style system like Michigan's, and the time necessary to develop the strength and technique to start could be longer than Nugent's contract.

However, Nugent does have a couple of major factors going for him. First is his collegiate experience, with four years in Stanford's pro-style offense followed by a fifth with Michigan. Secondly, Nugent's strengths should allow for a relatively easy transition to the NFL.

NFL.com's scouting report of Nugent depicts a player with a low ceiling but solid technique, which should make him stand out relative to other UDFAs.

But most importantly, the 49ers interior offensive line, specifically at center, is perhaps the weakest position on the roster. No player other than Jake Brendel, Aaron Banks, Dominick Puni, Spencer Burford, and Jon Feliciano are guaranteed anything close to roster spot, which leaves plenty of opportunity for Nugent to make his mark.

With his technical ability, he should be able to push aside some players that have stuck around on the 49ers roster for a while.
