49ers training camp overreactions: Brock Purdy tossing INTs, injuries abound
By Peter Panacy
Injuries are already hurting the 49ers entering Week 2 of training camp, while Brock Purdy and the offense struggled.
Monday marked the first day the pads went on during San Francisco 49ers training camp, which means the real start of camp competition begins at the dawn of week two.
And there are a few things to complain about. Shall we say, "overreact?"
The carryovers from last week still apply: Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk continued his hold-in amid a contract dispute, while All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams remains away from camp while he awaits a new contract, despite the fact he'll be subjected to notable fines.
It appears as if the Niners offense misses those two stars, as this side of the ball is clearly behind the defense, in terms of building chemistry and getting into a groove.
While no conclusions should be drawn just yet, it's worth overreacting to Monday's practice.
Brock Purdy struggles, tosses 3 interceptions in practice
Quarterback Brock Purdy, no stranger to scrutiny, won't silence his many doubters after Monday's outing, reportedly tossing three interceptions, albeit under contexts that are worth pointing out:
Judging by the analysis, perhaps it's one thing to criticize Purdy for turning the ball over. But it might be equally as reasonable to give credit to the defense while acknowledging the quarterback taking some shots in a "safe" situation and at a time when defenses are typically ahead of offenses.
It's not as if he's fighting for his starting job or anything, even if his detractors will use the latest camp outing as more ammunition to slight him.
49ers' makeshift O-line needs work
While Williams' absence is notable, a number of other starting-caliber offensive linemen also missed practice: Jon Feliciano, Spencer Burford (more on him in a moment) and Jake Brendel.
This led to a hodgepodge of linemen taking both first- and second-team reps, including the seldom-discussed Nick Zakelj getting red-zone snaps at center.
For the most part, judging by multiple insider accounts and observations, the patchwork O-line didn't do Purdy too many favors during 11-on-11 drills, although this group wasn't going up against pass-rushers like Nick Bosa and Drake Jackson (more on him, shortly, too).
Either way, getting Williams back into the fray will be vital.
49ers already dealing with injuries on a significant scale
San Francisco welcomed rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall (hamstring) back from the active/non-football injury list, giving him some workouts on special teams.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters the wide receiver would partake more on offensive drills on Tuesday, which is a good sign.
However, two other rookies, wide receiver Jacob Cowing (hamstring) and running back Isaac Guerendo (hamstring) are going to miss lengthy amounts of time, 10 days and several weeks, respectively.
On top of that, Jackson is not close to returning after undergoing offseason knee surgery:

Burford, meanwhile, is recovering from a broken hand and will miss approximately three weeks. Shanahan said it's not yet known whether or not surgery will be required.
Still, that means the 49ers' depth chart is already being tested, and a number of high-profile rookies are going to potentially fall behind in the competition to assert themselves on the roster.
Did we overreact enough?
