49ers surprisingly waive son of Hall of Fame legend
By Peter Panacy
It doesn't appear as if Terrell Owens will enjoy watching his son develop his own unique career in a 49ers uniform any longer.
There were plenty of legacy players available to the San Francisco 49ers both during and immediately after the 2024 NFL Draft, including sons of former legends like running back Frank Gore and Hall of Famer Jerry Rice.
Yet the Niners landed only one such player, wide receiver Terique Owens, son of Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens, the No. 2 all-time pass catcher in franchise history.
Owens, who onboarded as an undrafted free agent, had a long way to go to make San Francisco's 53-man roster, especially considering the crowded depth chart ahead of him that included two other rookies, both of whom were drafted, Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing.
Nevertheless, it would have been cool seeing the younger Owens carve out his own career in a 49ers uniform.
Alas, it's not meant to be.
49ers waive Terique Owens amid back-end crop of roster moves
Despite rumors of Owens performing well in training camp, on Wednesday, news broke from ESPN's Nick Wagoner about the Niners waiving the rookie wideout to make room at the back end of the 90-man offseason roster.
Additionally, veteran safety Erik Harris was released.
According to Owens' Instagram, it would appear the waiving would include an injury designation.
With the two open roster spots, San Francisco signed running back Ke'Shawn Vaughn and wide receiver Jontre Kirklin.
It might be a disappointing end to Owens' 49ers career, but it was to be expected. Perhaps the only reasonable thing that would have been cooler to watch would be TO's son partaking in the Niners' upcoming preseason campaign.
Because seeing another Owens in the red and gold on the field in a contest against another team would certainly bring back plenty of fond memories.
Hopefully for his sake, the younger Owens is able to latch on with another team and make his mark there.
