The 49ers will host their old rivals, the Cowboys, for a Sunday night showdown in Week 5.
The 2023 NFL schedule is slowly being leaked out over the course of Thursday, May 11, and the official release party will kick off later at 8 p.m. on NFL Network.
Many primetime games, however, have been announced and even confirmed by the league, meaning the San Francisco 49ers already have a glimpse of which teams they'll be playing in front of a national audience.
And one of them should be absolutely outstanding.
49ers vs. Cowboys on Sunday Night Football in Week 5 is what fans deserve
While the rivalry was dormant for much of the 2000s and 2010s, the last couple of years has seen a reinvigorated hatred between the Niners and their age-old arch nemesis, the Dallas Cowboys.
San Francisco has enacted some sweet revenge in back-to-back years in the playoffs, eliminating the Cowboys in the Wild Card round back in January of 2022 and then doing so in the divisional round this year.
For all those playoff losses the 49ers had against Dallas back in the early 1970s and again in the early 1990s, what has happened the last two years has been great.
At least for Niners fans.
Now, the two teams will square off against each other in Week 5 on Sunday Night Football. While leaks of the schedule suggested this game would happen, the NFL itself ultimately confirmed it:

San Francisco squares off against the NFC East as part of its 2023 NFL schedule, meaning head coach Kyle Shanahan's squad will also have matchups with the Cowboys' own divisional foes, the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants and Washington Commanders.
And while 49ers fans will be eager to witness some vengeance against the Eagles in Week 13, it'll be Sunday night's Week 5 showdown that'll probably have the edge.
We can't wait.
