49ers roster: 5 players whose stock is falling ahead of training camp

Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers don't truly compete for roster spots until training camp, but a number of players are already on the decline.

No. 2: 49ers kicker Zane Gonzalez

Through no fault of his own, veteran kicker Zane Gonzalez was placed on the weak side of the roster bubble immediately after the 49ers used a Round 3 NFL Draft pick on Michigan kicker Jake Moody.

Kicking footballs through uprights is one of the few things that'll exist without much change from the padless sessions of OTAs into the padded practices during training camp. To date, based on nearly every report from OTAs and minicamp, both Gonzalez and Moody had their share of hits and misses with neither truly separating from the other in a notable way.

That's advantageous to Moody, though. Not Gonzalez.

The Niners aren't going to jettison a third-round draft pick, especially if he's a specialist, unless he completely flames out during training camp or is wholly outclassed by the competition, Gonzalez in this case.

So far, Gonzalez isn't outperforming Moody at all, even if the two are relatively neck-and-neck in a competition that shouldn't be decided by draft status.

But it is, and that's why Gonzalez's stock is on the decline.
