49ers roster: Who's on the bubble, who isn't after 2 weeks of training camp
By Peter Panacy
49ers roster bubble watch: Quarterback
Lock: Sam Darnold, Brock Purdy
Strong bubble: Trey Lance
Weak bubble: none
Long shot: Brandon Allen
Ah, yes. You were anxious to get to this slide and see what was said.
For starters, Brandon Allen only makes the 49ers' 53-man roster if some sort of drastic transaction takes place between now and Week 1. And the only quarterback who could feasibly be featured in a drastic transaction is Trey Lance, who has come on strong as of late during camp practices.
Lance and Sam Darnold are still competing for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind Brock Purdy, though. So, the only way either Lance or Darnold end up starting this season is if Purdy either suffers a setback from his surgically repaired elbow or completely falters in year two despite impressing so much last season.
With $3.5 million of his $4.5 million one-year contract guaranteed, Darnold isn't going anywhere either.
In theory, the 49ers could keep Purdy, Lance and Darnold on the roster for all of 2023. Or they could look to trade Lance to the highest bidder after singing his praises and featuring him all during camp and the preseason.
Whatever happens, it'll be a heated discussion point.
