49ers roster: Who's on the bubble, who isn't after 2 weeks of training camp

There have been a few changes since Niner Noise's last 49ers bubble watch for 2023.

The 49ers have two weeks of training camp in the books, so let's assess which players are locks and who is on the roster bubble.

It's strange to think that San Francisco 49ers football will be back a week from today, as the Niners will travel to Nevada to take on the Las Vegas Raiders in both teams' opening exhibition campaign of the 2023 season.

Sure, it'll be nice to see quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who no longer has to worry about San Francisco's own quarterbacking situation after departing in NFL free agency last March.

That said, the 49ers' trio of quarterbacks (foursome, if you include Brandon Allen) has actually risen to impress over the second week of training camp after mostly floundering early.

That'll make head coach Kyle Shanahan's roster decisions that much tougher when it comes time to turn in his initial 53-man roster.

For now, though, there is plenty of time for those decisions to take place, but let's evaluate which Niners players are locks to make the regular-season squad, who's on the bubble and who has little more than a prayer.

There are some differences compared to our pre-training camp bubble watch, and for those who haven't been here before, we break down the bubble into the following four categories:

  • Lock: Barring injury or craziness, you're safe
  • Strong bubble: Looking pretty good but no guarantees
  • Weak bubble: You'll need far more than just a strong camp and preseason
  • Long shot: Good luck, dude.

Going through each position on San Francisco's current 90-man training camp roster, let's take a look at who's safe, who's not and who has next to no chance, starting off with special teams.
