49ers reunite with former assistant coach, hire him to Kyle Shanahan's staff

The 49ers are hiring former Raiders offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi, who previously had a tumultuous stint with the Niners.
The San Francisco 49ers have already undergone some serious changes to their coaching staff this offseason, bidding farewell to defensive coordinator Steve Wilks and then promoting another assistant, Nick Sorensen, to take over that role while also hiring former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley to serve as an assistant.
Additionally, the Niners have said goodbye to former running backs coach/assistant head coach Anthony Lynn and passing game coordinator Klint Kubiak, both of whom left for other positions after the Super Bowl.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has dealt with plenty of departures before, so the latest run of assistants isn't anything new.
On Friday, though, news broke that Shanahan was going to stage a franchise reunion with someone who previously worked with San Francisco and is now back on the staff.
Report: 49ers hiring former Raiders offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi
NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reported that Shanahan was hiring former Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi to the 49ers' offensive coaching staff:
Lombardi served on former Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels' staff until the middle of last season when he was ultimately dismissed along with McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler.
Prior to that, Lombardi also worked with the New England Patriots in 2011 and then from 2019 through 2021, and he also had a stint with the New York Jets that began in 2017.
Interestingly enough, though, Lombardi had a lengthy tenure with the Niners that has to be quite memorable, one that lasted from 2013 through 2016. During that timeframe, Lombardi worked on staffs that included former San Francisco head coaches Jim Harbaugh, Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly
Needless to say, Lombardi went through plenty of ups and downs during that tumultuous time during 49ers history.
Shanahan has yet to announce what Lombardi's role with the Niners will be now, but the well-traveled coach will likely have a position of at least some modest influence.
