49ers pre-training camp 53-man roster prediction: Who survives cuts?

With training camp getting started this week, it's an ideal time to take a look at where the 49ers roster could stand when the dust settles on the preseason.

49ers' Offensive Line

LT Trent Williams

LG Aaron Banks

C Jake Brendel

RG Jon Feliciano

RT Colton McKivitz

OL Dominick Puni

OL Ben Bartch

OL Jaylon Moore

OL Drake Nugent

If this were 2025, this group would look a lot different, but since it's only 2024, I feel fairly confident that the five that finished last season (more or less) will be the five that begins this season. Whether either starting guard will be around past 2024 isn't relevant right now.

That does, however, impact the backups, as rookie Dominick Puni is here to possibly play the Aaron Banks role from his rookie season: hang around on the roster and learn so he's ready to take over as a starter next year.

After Puni, the 49ers seem to like Bartch a lot, having poached him from the Jaguars practice squad last year and re-signing him this offseason, and Moore continues to be a solid if unspectacular swing tackle.

The interesting name here, and my first swing of the roster, is undrafted free agent rookie Drake Nugent, a guy who showed versality across the line during his time at Michigan, a school that has done well in developing pro-ready offensive lineman in the past. If Nugent name starts to rise during camp, he will force the 49ers to make a decision and keep him around rather than subject him to waivers.

This does spell the end of experiments with Spencer Burford and Nick Zakelj, both of whom could find their way to the practice squad, as neither seems to have made enough of an impression to overcome any of the above guys for a roster spot.
