49ers pre-training camp 53-man roster prediction: Who survives cuts?

With training camp getting started this week, it's an ideal time to take a look at where the 49ers roster could stand when the dust settles on the preseason.

49ers' Quarterbacks

QB Brock Purdy

QB Josh Dobbs

QB: Brandon Allen*

This is a pretty easy one to get us started, as there are few members of this roster more entrenched in their roles at the moment than quarterback Brock Purdy. He's about to enter his first normal training camp, one where is isn't a rookie or rehabbing from injury, and after his stellar 2023, he's looking to get even better.

The question becomes who comes out on top as Purdy's backup. On the one hand, Brandon Allen was here last year and would appear to have the slight advantage because of that. But I think the 49ers will appreciate Josh Dobbs' intelligence and ability to move in the pocket more than Allen's "been there, done that" steadiness, leading to the former Cardinal and Viking signal-caller to get the nod.

The change in the NFL's third quarterback rule means that Allen can be on the practice squad, saving a valuable active roster spot for elsewhere. It's always possible that the veteran doesn't clear waivers when he's released, in which case undrafted rookie Tanner Mordecai could be next in line, but ultimately I think Dobbs staying will matter more.
