This 49ers player may be the next one cut after preseason Week 1

After Saturday's preseason loss, the Niners may say goodbye to this running back.

While the outcome in terms of the score is fairly meaningless to teams during the preseason, how players performed is what is important. After all, the San Francisco 49ers aren't accustomed to losing much during the past few years.

When a player shines, it validates why they should remain with the team before cuts. In return, poor showings at this stage could lead to a players dismissal.

Following the 17-13 exhibition Week 1 loss against the Tennessee Titans, a few players may have played their last game for San Francisco.

In an already full running back room, this recently added 49er could be cut much like tight end Logan Thomas was last week.

Running back Matt Breida spent his first three seasons in the league playing for San Francisco. In 43 games, he amassed 1,902 yards and six rushing touchdowns in 381 carries.

The seven-year veteran has bounced around the NFL a bit with stops in out east in Miami, Buffalo and more recently, New York. Breida is still highly durable as he played all 17 games the past two seasons for the Giants.

Fellow rushers, Elijah Mitchell and Isaac Guerendo, did not take the field during the contest in Nashville. All-Pro Christian McCaffrey had already been ruled out this preseason due to a calf injury.

Third-year running back Jordan Mason had six carries for 34 yards and also scored once. Breida had as many carries but accounted for 0 total yards rushing. His longest rush was for 2 yards while Mason's longest was for 13 yards. Breida caught one pass for 5 yards but also had a fumble that was ultimately recovered by San Francisco.

It remains to be seen if Breida will remain with the team. However, when McCaffrey, Mitchell and Guerendo come back, it is hard to imagine Breida earning a spot on the final 53-man roster.

He has not outperformed Mason. Even wide receiver Trent Taylor had an explosive rush for 21 yards on a jet sweetp, as he also collected 48 receiving yards on just three catches.

Breida may serve another team's need for running back. San Francisco is not in demand for that position.

At least, not at this time.
