Who will 49ers peg to back up quarterback Brock Purdy in 2024?
By Scott Conrad
The 49ers may lose both of their backups to Brock Purdy this offseason, meaning some quarterbacks must be targeted.
As the NFL wrapped up another season, the San Francisco 49ers continue to look at ways to improve the roster.
One area to analyze is the depth chart for quarterback.
Both Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen are free agents this offseason. Brock Purdy, the starter, is the only quarterback under contract.
Here, we offer some viable options already on the roster, and we also take a look at options via free agency as well as the NFL Draft.
49ers option No. 1: Re-signing Sam Darnold makes sense
Let Allen walk. However, Darnold was not bad as a contingency plan.
Darnold completed 28 of his 46 attempts this season (61 percent) and threw for 297 yards, two scores and just one pick.
In the Week 18 game at home against the Los Angeles Rams, Darnold threw 16 of 26 with 189 yards and a touchdown to Ronnie Bell. His other one was also to Bell earlier in the season.
Having played his first three seasons with the New York Jets and two with the Carolina Panthers, Darnold signed a one-year deal in 2023 in the hopes to resurrect his career. He is a potential decent backup including for his current team.
