49ers news: Brock Purdy ranks No. 1 on very unique list by CBS Sports
By Peter Panacy
CBS Sports recently came up with an interesting list of unproven quarterbacks and their likelihood of success, and Brock Purdy ended up being No. 1.
It's squarely the middle of the NFL offseason. So, with little else going on around the league, one of the more popular things to do for media outlets is to come up with lists.
Heck, we've done it.
After a while, the lists can get pretty interesting and unique (or overly too creative, depending on your viewpoint).
So, with quarterback Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers having no shortage of attention on them this offseason, it's not a shocker that Purdy makes it onto a fairly uncommon ranking by CBS Sports.
CBS Sports thinks 49ers' Brock Purdy has best 'likeihood to succeed' of unproven QBs
Ranking unproven quarterbacks makes some sense, especially with the influx of young signal-callers over the last three years. Heck, the Niners have had two of them with Purdy and their top pick from the 2021 NFL Draft, Trey Lance.
But Lance seems to be falling out of grace, while Purdy, the final pick of the 2022 draft, has risen to the fringes of stardom after his impressive efforts toward the tail end of last season.
So, in looking at a list of unproven quarterbacks, CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan put Purdy in as the No. 1 quarterback to find success of this group for 2023, backing it up by writing:
"Health permitting, Purdy is in the best spot imaginable out of these young quarterbacks. He plays under an offensive mastermind in Kyle Shanahan and seemed to have no problems running his offense as a seventh-round rookie. Now that he has more experience within the system, he should only improve."

Sullivan also pointed out the other obvious factor: San Francisco's roster is stacked with offensive talent, including three All-Pros in tight end George Kittle, running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Deebo Samuel, plus there's another up-and-coming wideout in Brandon Aiyuk who led the 49ers in receiving yards a year ago.
It'd be hard for most moderatly competent quarterbacks to struggle in that context.
Along with Purdy, Sullivan also listed these six other unproven quarterbacks with a high chance of success:
- Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers
- Justin Fields, Chicago Bears
- Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers
- Mac Jones, New England Patriots
- Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh Steelers
- Desmond Ridder, Atlanta Falcons
- Sam Howell, Washington Commanders
