The 49ers made some tough roster-cut decisions, which led to these three impressive-but-waived players being claimed by other teams.

It was going to be inevitable to see some San Francisco 49ers players who ultimately didn't survive roster cuts swiped up by other teams within the 24-hour window after the Tuesday deadline to get rosters down to 53 players.

The Niners had their share of surprise cuts, too, including a number of undrafted free agents who had a good deal of potential and even impressed during both training camp and in the preseason.

So far, three such players are going to be heading to new teams to open up the 2023 season:

  • DB D'Shawn Jamison (Carolina Panthers)
  • OL Ilm Manning (Arizona Cardinals)
  • OL Keith Ismael (Arizona Cardinals)

Manning had an outsider's chance to make the regular-season squad, particularly with San Francisco's concern about the offensive line's depth. However, Arizona's own O-line is exceptionally weaker, so it's probable that Manning and Ismael both have a better chance to contribute right away instead of waiting around on a practice squad for an in-season call-up.

Jamison, meanwhile, could be the waiver claim that hurts the most.

The former Texas Longhorn had great positional flexibility within the secondary, and he was also a special teams contributor who could have carved out a role there for the 49ers, too. As one of the potential dark-horse candidates to secure a prominent role right away, he'll instead be off to now-Niners defensive coordinator Steve Wilks' former employer, the Panthers, who'll also present a better immediate opportunity for Jamison to contribute.

On the flip side, San Francisco did not make any waiver claims and can now begin signing players as free agents or to its practice squad.
