Former 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo heisted millions from Raiders in 2023
Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo joined the Las Vegas Raiders last offseason looking for a fresh start. While he enjoyed great success with the Niners, there was also a lot of turmoil in his final years in red and gold with injuries and the drafting of Trey Lance.
Instead of a fresh start, Jimmy G’s 2023 campaign with Vegas was a nightmare on the field. Garoppolo only played in seven games for the Raiders. He had a completion percentage of 65.1 and threw for 1,205 yards with seven touchdowns against nine interceptions.
Yet, in classic Jimmy G fashion, he still had a respectable 3-3 record as a starter.
Jimmy Garoppolo received millions from Raiders in 2023 but hardly earned it
Nonetheless, his poor play got him benched and contributed in part to the firing of head coach Josh McDaniels.
In short, it was a very bad year for Jimmy G on the football field.
Off the football field, it was a different story. Just look at all of the money that Garoppolo made this season, and will continue to make next season, even though he played so poorly:
That’s at least one consolation prize for Jimmy G. Even though his career in the NFL seems in doubt, he still has some money in the bank.
Garoppolo will be 33 years old next year, and the safe bet is that he could secure a backup job on a roster next season. Despite the injury history and his struggles, he still has a proven track record as a successful starter in the NFL.
Who knows? maybe if Niners No. 2 quarterback Sam Darnold decides to depart in free agency, the 49ers will decide to bring back their old friend to back up Brock Purdy.
Yeah right.
Purdy’s success has brought about a debate on Garoppolo’s time with the Niners. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I will choose to remember Garoppolo’s time in San Francisco positively. He played well in a lot of games and was a part of some truly entertaining wins.
However, Purdy seems to be an upgrade, as the offense has seemed to click on a different level with him and Christian McCaffrey in the lineup.
Nonetheless, no matter what you make of Garoppolo’s recent struggles or his legacy as a 49er, he has certainly made some serious bank in his career.
