It's not the best start for him at training camp, but 49ers rookie cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. is heading to the PUP list with an undisclosed injury.

The San Francisco 49ers opened up the rookie portion of their 2023 training camp on Monday, and it appears as if they're already enduring injuries.

According to the NFL transaction wire, news shared by The Athletic's David Lombardi, the Niners are placing cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. on the physically unable-to-perform (PUP) list on the opening day of rookie training camp.

Lombardi shared the news Monday afternoon:

The NFL transaction wire does not state the nature of the injury. Instead, the wire merely has to suggest the player was moved from the active portion of the team's 90-man offseason roster to this injury list.

As Lombardi pointed out, the active/PUP list can be used when San Francisco officially starts training camp next week. The 49ers don't have to think about either using a roster spot to get Luter to a protected injury list at the start of the regular season or waiving him before subsequently re-signing him on an injured list.

Instead, the fifth-round rookie NFL Draft pick out of Southern Alabama will have the better part of two months to work his way back from whatever injury was suffered on the opening day of rookie practices.

Had it been an injury that took place away from Niners activities, Luter would have landed on the non-football injury list, which governs all non-NFL (including collegiate) injuries.

Luter is currently competing for what could be a starting boundary cornerback job opposite San Francisco's No. 1 corner, Charvarius Ward. Other defensive backs in the mix include Deommodore Lenoir, Ambry Thomas and Qwauntrezz Knight, among others.
