42. 8:20 p.m. ET. 3-1. 123. NBC. Sunday, Oct. 8. 49ers-Cowboys opening. 4-0. 49ers -3.5

The 49ers play their second primetime game of the season, and this time it'll be against the biggest rival in franchise history, the Cowboys.

There may be those who feel the San Francisco 49ers' red-hot 4-0 start to the 2023 season is a bit of a fluke.

After all, the Pittsburgh Steelers have an abysmal offense, the Los Angeles Rams are reconstructing, the New York Giants are wholly inconsistent and the Arizona Cardinals are competing for a top NFL Draft pick in 2024.

The Niners' Week 5 opponent, though, is another squad in the mix for the NFC title this season, the Dallas Cowboys.

At 3-1, with their only loss coming via a surprise by the Cardinals in Week 3, the Cowboys are nevertheless one of three or four legitimate contenders within the conference for a trip to the Super Bowl. And, in the wake of San Francisco's pre-Week 1 trade of quarterback Trey Lance to Dallas, there'll be even more storylines than those that'll automatically exist between these two teams because of their storied histories against each other and the rivalry that accompanies them.

For now, though, the 49ers and Cowboys are slated for a high-profile Sunday Night Football game in Week 5, and Niner Noise breaks down what you'll need to know in advance of the primetime contest.
