49ers should bump these 3 players down the depth chart after Week 2
By John Porter
Cornerback Isaac Yiadom
It all started pretty well for cornerback Isaac Yiadom against the Jets on Monday night. He recorded a key pass breakup, and most importantly, particularly for a cornerback, he wasn't visibly beaten on any plays. He had a solid game and looked as advertised when the 49ers acquired him on a one-year deal in free agency.
That didn't follow on Sunday.
After the Niners got themselves back into the game via running back Jordan Mason's bustling touchdown run, there was briefly a chance for San Francisco to fully put itself back in the game, provided a defensive stop was achieved, and the Vikings found themselves needing a third-down conversion on three separate occasions.
Unfortunately, the 49ers couldn't get the Vikings off the field, and Yiadom was a big reason why, being a frequent target of quarterback Sam Darnold on those key downs.
What was more troubling was the fact Yiadom wasn't even matching up against Minnesota's best targets. Justin Jefferson left the game, while fellow pass catchers Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson were both missing as well.
It's not a great look for Yiadom that he couldn't defend against those players, with wide receiver Jalen Nailor, in particular, benefitting from the defensive back's play.
He'll certainly have better players to line up across from as the season goes on, not least in the 49ers' upcoming games against the likes of the Arizona Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Rams.
While the Niners have had success bargain shopping in the free agency market in recent years, there is sometimes a reason why certain players are available on short-term deals at knock-down prices.
Yiadom looked every inch the interchangeable average NFL corner in Week 2.
Bearing that in mind, and with at least two young corners in Renardo Green and Darrell Luter Jr. pushing for playing time behind him, Yiadom needs to show more consistency in the next few games to avoid losing playing time and becoming this year's version of failed corner Isaiah Oliver.
Are there any players you would drop down the depth chart following the 49ers' most recent loss?
