Welcome to the one part of the roster where there's a technicality.

Of course, 49ers fans know the new NFL rule that allows for an "emergency" quarterback, a third-stringer who won't count against the active gameday roster but will still dress in case the first two quarterbacks suffer injuries.

Sometimes referred to as the "Brock Purdy" rule, Brandon Allen will assume this again after backing up Purdy and now-Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold a year ago.

With Darnold gone, the Niners turned to journeyman Josh Dobbs to be the No. 2 on the depth chart. While the hope is he won't see any meaningful snaps, Dobbs at least provides some comfort in case Purdy is lost for any extensive period of time.

Way down the list, undrafted free-agent pickup Tanner Mordecai out of Wisconsin hopes to continue his pro-level development as a practice squad candidate.
