It will be several months until the San Francisco 49ers play Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia. A lot can change before then if the Niners have injuries, sign more free agents, or maybe even if general manager John Lynch is feeling frisky and swings a trade.
But as things currently stand, there are several players on the Niners who probably won't be on the roster when the regular season starts.
Let's take a look at three such players who will most likely not be on the plane to Melbourne.
Isaac Guerendo
Even last season, it became clear running back Isaac Guerendo had fallen out of favor. He did not receive a single carry and even saw his role as a kick returner get taken away.
Now, the Niners go into next season with Jordan James, who was a rookie last season and eclipsed Guerendo on the depth chart when he got healthy, and freshly drafted Kaelon Black, both of whom are likely going to be ahead of Guerendo.
The writing seems like it is on the wall, so barring an injury or something unforeseen, Guerendo may be looking to get a chance with another team next season.
Demarcus Robinson
The 49ers added several wide receivers: Mike Evans and Christian Kirk in free agency and De'Zhaun Stribling in the NFL Draft.
That means that veteran Demarcus Robinson may be left out of the mix.
He had a bit of a disappointing 2025 season, so if the Niners think they can get more out of the other players on the roster, then Robinson might be cut to make room for others.
Jalen Graham
Another position group that has too many players is linebacker. Fred Warner is going to be back after his injury last season, Dre Greenlaw was bought back in free agency, and the Niners re-signed depth pieces like Garret Wallow and Luke Gifford. Oh yeah, and don't forget about Tatum Bethune.
The Niners addressed this abundance of linebackers by trading Dee Winters, but Jalen Graham is still lingering on the depth chart. He hasn't done much in his three NFL seasons, so the Niners may be better off cutting their losses on him at this point, which would be yet another player from their 2023 draft who did not pan out.
It's good to have depth on a team, but when the Niners whittle the roster down to 53 players, these three guys may be on the outside, looking in, and may have to be cut.
