NFL cranked up the heat on the 49ers (literally) with 2026 schedule

Gonna be some hot ones.

The full regular-season schedule for the San Francisco 49ers has been released. While there are certainly some tough stretches, even the stretches that are considered “easy” may not be as straightforward as they appear on paper.

The NFL was nice enough to give the Niners three straight home games after their Week 1 trip to Melbourne to face the Los Angeles Rams, but those three games will all be afternoon games and will come against teams used to playing in the heat, as David Lombardi of the San Francisco Standard noted on social media:

Heat early in the season at Levi’s Stadium has been a bit of an issue the last few years. The Niners completely collapsed and lost a game they should have won against the Arizona Cardinals back in 2024, and some blamed the heat for San Francisco losing its steam in the second half.

The 49ers adjusted by letting the NFL know early they wanted to wear their white uniforms, typically reserved for road games, at home in the first month or two of the season.

They defeated the Cardinals 16-15 in their all-white uniforms last season in late September at Levi’s but then lost the next week to the Jacksonville Jaguars at home wearing their typical road jerseys at Levi’s.

So, maybe the white uniforms don’t make all that much of a difference, and quarterback Brock Purdy’s turf-toe injury probably played a role in that loss to the Jags more than anything else.

This season, the Niners will face the Miami Dolphins in Week 2, which will be in mid September, so expect that to be a hot one. Then, the Niners will face the Cardinals in Week 3 and the Denver Broncos in Week 4.

On paper, the game against Denver appears to be the toughest test since the Broncos went deep in the playoffs last year, but the Dolphins and Cardinals are used to the heat, so that could be an equalizing factor in those games.

The 49ers should take care of business and win at least two of those three games, but the heat has burned them before, so perhaps it will again.

Thankfully, that should be the end of the scorchers as the one home game they play in October is at night, and by November, the weather should be a bit cooler.

Still, it’s something to watch for early in the season, especially for a team coming off jet lag as it returns from Australia.
