New 49ers coaching staff sure reeks of nepotism

Is there any nepotism at play here by chance?

On Jan. 31, 1999, the Denver Broncos walked off the field of (then) Pro Player Stadium in Miami as back-to-back Super Bowl champions, having defeated the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII.

Head coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak led the Broncos to both of those championships. Now, 26 years later, their respective sons hope to have even close to the same level of success with the San Francisco 49ers.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan is, of course, a familiar face with the Niners, having been the head coach of the team since 2017.

Klay Kubiak is the newly minted offensive coordinator after having spent the past four seasons with the team in various assistant coaching positions.

There are some other individuals on San Francisco's 2025 coaching staff, however, who have very recognizable names.

Now, football "nepo babies" have been around the NFL for a while, this is nothing new. And this is not to say that these individuals haven't worked hard and deserve to be where they are.

That said, let's take a look at some of the new faces on the 49ers' coaching staff with notable fathers.

Mick Lombardi

When quarterbacks coach Brian Griese, who had been in that position since 2022, decided to step away from coaching in 2025, the 49ers had to look at someone else to coach their offensive leaders.

The Niners ultimately looked in-house and promoted Mick Lombardi, who was a senior offensive assistant with the team in 2024.

Lombardi, while not related to the great Vince Lombardi, is the son of Michael Lombardi.

The elder Lombardi was a long-time NFL front-office executive. This season, he joins Bill Belichick, with whom he previously worked on the New England Patriots, as the University of North Carolina's new GM.

Mick Lombardi will look to continue the development of quarterback Brock Purdy, whom Griese had been working with since the passer's rookie year.

Jake Lynch

Another hire to the 49ers' 2025 coaching staff is Jake Lynch, as the team's defensive quality control person.

Lynch, in case you haven't guessed it yet, is current general manager and Hall of Fame safety John Lynch's son.

The younger Lynch played linebacker at Stanford from 2018 to 2021. He spent last season as a defensive graduate assistant on University of Washington's coaching staff.

Jake Lynch will look to assist defensive coordinator Robert Saleh in his second stint with the 49ers this upcoming season.
