San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Mike Evans is entering Sunday without an injury designation. After playing through a painful rib injury last week against the Denver Broncos, Kyle Shanahan felt comfortable enough to take his veteran pass catcher completely off the injury report ahead of Week 5's matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.
While Evans appears to have overcome his ailment, he will be faced with a different, and arguably more daunting task. The future Hall of Famer will likely go head-to-head with formidable cornerback Devon Witherspoon.
The All-Pro secondary man was graded the number one overall cornerback by PFF last year and has carried that momentum into this season. Only Commanders' wide receiver Terry McLaurin has eclipsed 60 yards through the air against the Seahawks through four games.
Evans and Witherspoon have never faced off before, so the matchup will be a storyline to monitor. Each possesses key advantages that will inevitably make each play a competitive battle between the two.
At 6'4", Evans has the clear size advantage, but Witherspoon is a twitchy, athletic corner with a high football IQ. Not to mention he will have the home crowd behind him every step of the way. Needless to say, Evans will likely have his toughest assignment of the season thus far.
49ers offense may hinge on Mike Evans' success in brutal matchup
Mike Evans has a tough matchup in Week 5, but quarterback Brock Purdy may have no other choice but to force-feed him at times. Aside from fellow receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle, the Niners have few other healthy options in the passing game.
Last year, running back Christian McCaffrey was virtually erased in the 49ers' three games against Seattle. If that trend continues, more will fall onto the shoulders of Purdy. If his top wideout is unable to create enough separation to help him out, it could be a long day for the offense.
San Francisco scored a combined 22 points in the three-game set last year, which includes the six points in their postseason loss. In such a heated divisional matchup, the outcome of this game may very well hinge on one or two big plays from someone like Mike Evans.
In short, the 49ers will need their alpha wide receiver to overcome his tough matchup in order to help the team win. Kyle Shanahan will need to scheme up ways for Evans to get open, or the passing game could be in trouble.
