The San Francisco 49ers have mostly dealt with bad news on the wide receiver injury front this season, so it made sense fans feared the worst when veteran Mike Evans exited Week 3's win over the Arizona Cardinals with what was determined to be a rib injury.

Thankfully, Evans was later declared as day-to-day, leaving room for the possibility of suiting up in Week 4's home contest against the 2-1 Denver Broncos.

General manager John Lynch previously acknowledged Evans' availability would hinge on pain tolerance, and even if the receiver missed the full slate of practices ahead of Sunday's showdown, Evans wouldn't need much to maintain his already imposing prowess within head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense.

Would Evans play, though?

On Friday, Shanahan's injury report listed Evans as questionable, and subsequent reports suggested the receiver would be a game-time decision.

The game-day decision was understandable, particularly as it'd allow Evans an extra two days to heal and make a determination. Additionally, the Niners had a contingency plan in place, promoting recently signed Brandin Cooks up from the practice squad, in case Evans wouldn't be available.

Then, on Sunday morning, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Evans would "push to play" against Denver, meaning it'd effectively be a gametime decision contingent upon his own pain tolerance.

While it's clearly good news Evans may be available, the hotter conditions at Levi's Stadium could ultimately compound his full use, potentially prompting Shanahan to keep his top receiver on a snap count throughout the game.

Cooks, along with fringe receivers like Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins, should expect to see an uptick in usage, while the 49ers may also plan on deploying a run-heavy offense against a questionable Denver run-stopping defense when the two teams kick off from Levi's Stadium.
