Mikail Kamara is the 49ers' UDFA who should generate the most buzz

Perhaps he's the one who stands out the most among Niners UDFAs.

The San Francisco 49ers are a topheavy team across several portions of their 90-man offseason roster, including their defensive line.

That means there's room for a potential darkhorse like Indiana's Mikail Kamara to find his way onto the 53-man crop, come Week 1.

Granted, the road for undrafted free agents is never easy. And for the 6-foot-1, 262-pound defensive lineman, he's a little too short to be anything but a 1-technique interior rusher and not quite heavy enough for a true nose tackle who can get into the backfield regularly.

But there's a lot to like. And Kamara has a history of production, too.

In 2024, Kamara notched 10 sacks and 15 tackles for a loss. And while those numbers dropped down to two and seven, respectively, during the Hoosiers' championship run, Kamara nevertheless maintained a high level of impact.

And he overcame his natural shortcomings with excellent technique and physicality.

Those may wind up working out for him well as he seeks a role on the Niners depth chart.

Mikail Kamara could surprise 49ers as their top UDFA entering 2026

Kamara's $50,000 in guarantees on the original three-year contract signed after last April's draft isn't enough to fully ensure a spot on the 53-man roster, but it does help over others who didn't receive such compensation up front.

Already, out of all the UDFAs San Francisco picked up after the draft, Kamara seems to be commanding the most intrigue and attention, and The Athletic already tabbed the Indiana product as the top undrafted rookie to watch for the 49ers heading into summer.

The Niners' starting crop is largely set: Nick Bosa, Osa Odighizuwa, Alfred Collins and likely a combination of either C.J. West and drafted rookie Gracen Halton, while Mykel Williams works his way back from a torn ACL suffered last year.

The depth behind that group is undetermined, though, meaning Kamara might easily rise through the ranks and surpass other interior defenders like Bryson Eason, Cameron Sample and Sebastian Valdez for what'd likely be a final spot on the depth chart.

Given neither of those names are fully pegged for a bona fide role, it's understandable why Kamara has a golden opportunity to flourish right in front of him.

Fans must keep an eye on the undrafted rookie in training camp, then pay attention to when he's entering preseason games and how many snaps he's receiving.

If it's early and a lot, that could be a sign Kamara is well on his way toward defying the odds and actually making the 53-man roster.
