While Brock Purdy was able practice with his San Francisco 49ers teammates this past week, albeit in a limited capacity, the $265 million man still isn't quite ready for actual game reps as he continues to battle a case of turf toe and will not be on the field this Sunday afternoon for the Niners' Week 8 matchup with DeMeco Ryans and the Houston Texans.
Sunday will mark the fourth consecutive game that Purdy will watch from the sidelines and the fifth overall. As such, Mac Jones, who has been battling some nagging injuries of his own and admirably battling through all of them, will once again take the snaps for San Francisco.
Has Jones been anywhere near perfect for the 49ers in his five appearances? Certainly not. But he's undoubtedly been solid enough to allow the Niners to be patient with Purdy's recovery, completing 67.0 percent of his passes for 1,404 yards with six touchdowns against four interceptions to earn a respectable passer rating of 89.8, which is just slightly below the league average.
But Jones seemingly isn't one to genuinely care about padding the stat sheet as long his team gets a win. And for the most part, that's what the Niners have done with him under center, going 4-1 in his five starts, the only loss coming in Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
And in getting that fourth win with the one-time Pro Bowler at the helm last Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, a lucrative incentive in Jones' contract kicked in, which has put an extra $400,000 in his pocket with the potential for more to come.
Mac Jones has collected a $100,000 bonus for each of his victories with the 49ers
After spending last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars following his three-year run with the New England Patriots, Jones signed a two-year deal with San Francisco this past May worth up to $8.41 million, with $4.75 million in guaranteed money.
One of the incentives built into his contract is that he would receive $100,000 for every regular-season win the 49ers earned in which he took at least 25 percent of the team's offensive snaps. The little caveat that was also included was that it took a minimum of four such games for the incentive to kick in. Well, as mentioned, he got that fourth win against Atlanta, thus giving him a payout of $400,000.
So, from here on out, every game that the Niners win in which he takes at least a quarter of the snaps, he'll get an extra $100,000. And if Purdy continues to sit, there's another incentive that could come into play, as Jones would receive an additional $550,000 if he ends up taking 50 percent of the snaps and San Francisco makes the playoffs.
Jones' attempt to reach the half-million mark against the Texans gets underway at 1:00 p.m. Eastern/10:00 a.m. Pacific on Sunday at NRG Stadium.
