Longtime 49ers nemesis couldn't be failing any harder with Giants

The Niners may not see Russell Wilson when they visit the Giants in early November.

When the Seattle Seahawks traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos a few years back, nobody was happier to see him leave the NFC West than the San Francisco 49ers.

During his decade-long run in the Pacific Northwest, Wilson absolutely tormented the Niners, going 16-4 against them in the regular season, while also leading Seattle to a 23-17 victory over San Francisco in the NFC Championship game following the 2013 campaign. The Seahawks, of course, then went on to win Super Bowl 48.

And even when he got to Denver in 2022, he led the Broncos to an 11-10 win over the 49ers in Week 3, upping his overall record against his longtime rivals to a ridiculous 18-4. Those 18 wins, by the way, are easily the most he has against any team.

That 2022 matchup with Denver was the last time the Niners faced Wilson, as they didn't have the Pittsburgh Steelers on their schedule a season ago.

They are, however, scheduled to face his newest team this year, as they'll visit the New York Giants in Week 9.

But given how things have gone for Russ thus far with Big Blue, one has to wonder if he'll even be the starter by then, as there's reporting he'll be benched for first-round rookie Jaxson Dart:

We'll see if that holds by the time the G-Men and Niners square off.

Yes, Wilson threw for a career-high 450 yards and three touchdowns in the Giants' Week 2 shootout loss to the Dallas Cowboys. But let's not pretend the Dallas defense is any sort of force this season, so that performance undoubtedly has to be taken with a grain of salt.

Otherwise, Wilson has looked downright dreadful.

In Week 1, he completed just 17 of 37 passes for 168 yards with no touchdowns in a 21-6 loss to the Washington Commanders, thus earning a passer rating of 59.3. And this past Sunday night in a 22-9 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs, the 10-time Pro Bowler was even worse, earning a 43.8 passer rating after connecting on just 18 of 32 throws for 160 yards with no touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.

Despite Wilson's poor play, the Giants were still technically in the mix in the fourth quarter against the three-time defending AFC champs and had a chance to get within a score with just over three minutes remaining. They trailed 22-9 but found themselves in a 1st-and-goal situation at the Kansas City 4-yard line, only for Russ to deliver one of the worst-looking sequences of his entire career.

Take a look:

Needless to say, the New York faithful weren't overly pleased with how things played out, and they certainly let Wilson hear it. Chants of "WE WANT DART!" had been thrown out there earlier in the game, and there were plenty more following this red-zone botch job.

We'll see what happens with Dart under center, and there's a good chance it spells the end of Wilson's tenure as a starter in the Big Apple.

So, again, the 49ers may not get the chance to improve their record against Wilson when they visit MetLife Stadium on Nov. 2.
