Life looked very different the last time the 49ers won the Super Bowl

A lot (and we can't stress this enough) has changed in the decades since.

San Francisco 49ers fans never hesitate to remind other teams' fans of the fact their favorite franchise has five Super Bowl victories under its belt.

Those other fans never hesitate to remind Niners fans how decades have passed since the last time San Francisco hoisted a Lombardi Trophy.

Indeed, plenty has changed since the 49ers pulled off a dominant 49-26 victory over the San Diego Chargers (see, there's one change right there) in Super Bowl XXIX on Jan. 29, 1995. Aside from the last Super Bowl win being in an entirely different century, over 30 years have passed since the Niners won their fifth league championship.

And, for fans who wish to head down memory lane, 1995 might look completely unrecognizable to what fans are familiar with now.

Oh, and Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Steve Young looked a lot, lot younger than they do now, too.

So, put away your smartphones (they didn't exist yet), break out your pagers (remember those?) and dust off those old Whitney Houston albums.

Let's look at what was going on at the time San Francisco last won a Super Bowl.

What was going on the last time 49ers won a Super Bowl?

Younger members of the Faithful might have to ask their parents about VHS cassette tapes, Blockbuster, calling POP-CORN to get the time, and what it was like to hear, "You've got mail," when you logged onto AOL... using dial-up internet, no less.

Aside from that, there are plenty of other differences between now and when the 49ers' last won a Super Bowl.

  • Bill Clinton was still in the middle of his first term as President
  • Whitney Houston was the big winner at the 1994 Grammy's; "I Will Always Love You" was the record of the year
  • Ace of Base's "I Saw the Sign" was the Billboard 100's top song
  • America Online (AOL) grew from 1.5 million subscribers to four million by the end of 1995
  • The Ford Taurus was the best-selling automobile
  • Hit movies like Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction and The Lion King dominated box offices and awards
  • Only 24 million Americans owned cell phones, roughly 10 percent of the U.S. population
  • Former Niners defensive tackle DeForest Buckner was 10 months old
  • The Cleveland Browns made the playoffs under head coach Bill Belichick

  • The murder trial of O.J. Simpson started five days prior to Super Bowl XXIX
  • Friends was in the middle of its inaugural season
  • Matlock was in the middle of its final season
  • Chuck Norris was 54 years old
  • Google was over four years away from being founded
  • Amazon.com had just been founded
  • This Pepsi Super Bowl commerical was tops in the 1995 Ad Meter:
  • Wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, father of running back Christian McCaffrey was on San Francisco's Super Bowl-winning roster
  • The Rams announce a move from Los Angeles to St. Louis
  • Sony PlayStation launched the month before
  • Former 49ers defensive tackle D.J. Jones was 10 days old
  • The Niners had the best alternate uniform (and still do to this day)

For those who can recall the mid-1990s while remembering what a dial-up internet connection sounded like, this trip down memory lane is a fun one.

While it's hard to acknowledge how much has changed since San Francisco's last Super Bowl crown, at least there's some comfort in knowing how great of a decade it truly was, intersected by the 49ers' last Lombardi Trophy.

Hopefully, fans won't have to wait for an even starker contrast to yesteryear by the time the Niners' next Super Bowl championship finally happens.
