NFL commissioner Roger Goodell recently told reporters he'd like for every team to play at least one international game on the regular-season docket.
For the San Francisco 49ers, it's not too hard to see where such a game would take them.
The last time the Niners played outside of the country, it was back in 2022 against their in-division rivals, the Arizona Cardinals, in what was supposed to be a home game for the red birds but was ultimately dominated by San Francisco fans.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the 49ers easily handled Arizona by a score of 38-10 at Estadio Azteca.
Given the trend of expanding the NFL beyond the United States' borders, it wouldn't be shocking whatsoever to see the Niners again play internationally.
And in Mexico seems to be the most logical guess, especially if owner Jed York's latest comments are any indication.
Jed York hints at another 49ers game in Mexico in 2026
With the Bay Area hosting Super Bowl 60 at Levi's Stadium, York has been getting plenty of screen time with the media as of late, and one of the frequently discussed topics has been whether or not San Francisco will play a game outside of the country at some point soon.
Speaking to Imagen Sports' Emilio Leon Baz (h/t Kyle Madson of Niners Wire), York acknowledged a Mexico City home game would be the preferred choice.
"We always have communication with the league," York declared. "For us, Mexico is one of our markets. We will most likely give up a home game this season to play abroad, and Mexico is always No. 1 on my list."
While giving up a home game might not be the most desirable of outcomes, specifically for California-based fans and the players themselves, at least playing in Mexico would offset any lengthy overseas travel.
Just consider the Los Angeles Rams having to travel to Melbourne, Australia, to play one of their games on the upcoming docket.
Mexico City seems much better a flight.
