John Lynch didn't exactly sound too optimistic about Brock Purdy being able to go for the 49ers' Week 12 road game against the Packers.
In an ideal world, backup quarterbacks only see the field for meaningless reps during any particular game.
The San Francisco 49ers may have to turn to their backup, Brandon Allen, in a crucial Week 12 game against the 7-3 Green Bay Packers, though, given the latest injury status and concern over starting quarterback Brock Purdy's shoulder issue.
For a San Francisco squad looking to get back in the postseason hunt amid its 5-5 start, the loss of such an important piece is potentially devastating.
Purdy apparently suffered a shoulder injury during the Niners' 20-17 Week 11 home loss to the Seattle Seahawks, dealing with the pain in-game before it crept into his practice workouts in advance of Week 12.
At one point during Thursday's practices, Purdy exited the field and did not return.
John Lynch's updates on Brock Purdy injury cause concern for 49ers-Packers game
Speaking to KNBR 680 on Friday (h/t 49ers Webzone), general manager John Lynch shared how Purdy underwent an MRI on his shoulder, and the GM also detailed how the quarterback's early exit from Thursday's practice was part of the rehabilitation plan.
Still, there appear to be plenty of doubts as to whether Purdy will be available on Sunday at Lambeau Field.
"We'll see where he's at today," Lynch said of Purdy's prognosis. "Hopefully, he makes progress, and we can have a shot at this weekend, but we'll see. I think it is tenuous."
That leaves Friday's practices as a vital determining point.
"We feel good about where it's at from that standpoint," Lynch added. "But still, you have to be able to go out and operate. So, we're kind of figuring all that out. Brock's going to show up here today, and we'll see where he can go in terms of practice, and we'll make some decisions accordingly."
The GM also noted that if Purdy is unable to go, Allen would be the starter at Green Bay with No. 3 quarterback Josh Dobbs serving as his backup.
Allen has seen just one snap this year, a kneel-down way back in Week 1 in the win over the New York Jets.
The Niners and Packers kick off on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 4:25 p.m. ET.
