As if the San Francisco 49ers weren't dealing with enough to begin the 2026 season, news broke earlier this week that Rams legend Aaron Donald worked out for his former team, making his coming out of retirement all but a done deal.
Now, talks have furthered, as he is within mere days of making his official decision. If he does decide to rejoin Los Angeles before Week 1, San Francisco would be his first victim.
Donald's return would be devastating for a 49ers team that already finds itself chasing two division frontrunners. The Rams currently boast one of the most talented defenses in the NFL, and adding a future Hall-of-Famer would only further that advantage.
With that being said, the Niners' odds to win the division seem to have only gotten longer, as the gap between them and the Rams continues to widen. Even the Seattle Seahawks appear to hold a significant talent advantage, given the fact that they have enjoyed a much healthier first two weeks of training camp.
Donald's return paired with 49ers injuries could spell disaster
The disparity in health between the 49ers and their divisional counterparts is nothing short of comical. Since the start of camp, the Seahawks have had just five injury notifications via ESPN. The Rams have had three.
The Niners, in comparison, have had 20.
Aaron Donald joining Los Angeles would only make the rich that much richer. It's difficult to see how San Francisco could pull off a division upset as it is. With such stalwart defenses eagerly awaiting their shot to torment Brock Purdy, it would be a miracle if coach Kyle Shanahan could replicate the same 12-5 surprise that his squad pulled off last year. Given the fact that injuries appear to be playing an even more prominent role, replicating that success doesn't appear likely.
The Rams are already odds-on Super Bowl favorites, and adding one of the best interior linemen ever to play the game would move the needle even further in their favor. At some point, general manager John Lynch may have to face the facts. As it stands, San Francisco simply doesn't have a roster capable of competing with its divisional counterparts, as well as some of the league's other stiffest competitors.
With so many key players on the wrong side of 30, it's only a matter of time before the 49ers will be forced to turn the page and focus on building for the future. Whether they can do so in time to compete while Brock Purdy remains the starter remains to be seen. One thing is certain, though. If August is any indication of how the rest of the season will go, fans will be dreading every matchup against their two divisional big brothers.
