On the eve of the 2026 regular season, NFL insider Jason La Canfora predicted this season could be head coach Kyle Shanahan's last with the San Francisco 49ers.
Contributing for FanSided, La Canfora evaluated many of the odd front-office developments the Niners underwent all offseason long and suggested it might be possible Shanahan would be shown the door.
After all, his original contract only ran through 2027, and a bad year at the helm of the squad could result in an early termination.
If there was any possibility of that development happening, fellow NFL insider Tom Pelissero just put a stop to the speculation with his latest report.

Now working for The Ringer and Netflix, the longtime NFL Network insider reported that San Francisco "quietly" extended Shanahan at some point during the offseason, ensuring he stays in the Bay Area long beyond the original 2027 end date:

Sure, Shanahan's critics will be fast to point out how he's yet to win a Super Bowl despite being at the helm of the franchise for the last 10 years and boasting perennial championship contenders for the bulk of that tenure.
Yet the hard truth is that Shanahan has kept the 49ers not only relevant but also a contender through some awfully challenging seasons. Last season, when the Niners were dealing with a massive rash of serious injuries across their roster, Shanahan and his staff ultimately led the group to a 12-win campaign and a Wild Card victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
It might've been Shanahan's finest coaching job yet.
Additionally, Shanahan is now one of the three longest-tenured head coaches in the NFL, the other two being the Los Angeles Rams' Sean McVay and the Kansas City Chiefs' Andy Reid.
In an era when head coaches seem to revolve regularly on a season-to-season basis, having that stability certainly gives San Francisco a major advantage. And that advantage has kept the franchise more than just relevant over the last 10 years.
49ers trust Kyle Shanahan to oversee pending changes
There's still plenty of work for Shanahan to do going forward. The 49ers boast one of the oldest rosters in the league entering 2026, and it won't be long before their core of star players is ultimately forced to call it a career.
Amid concerns of failed NFL Draft classes in recent seasons, the Niners may not have younger replacements waiting in the folds—the next core of cornerstone players around which to build.
Yet Shanahan has been through those phases before, and it's not hard to see how effective he was at tearing down the roster he inherited back in 2017 and building a perennial contender in a relatively short amount of time.
Perhaps he may have to do so again within the next few seasons. But, in light of this reported extension, it certainly appears as if San Francisco trusts him to do just that and then some.
