There's drama following the San Francisco 49ers' first loss of the 2025 regular season but not for the reasons you might think. Yes, the 49ers lost the game, but the talk of the post-game wasn't necessarily about that but about Robert Saleh's spat with Liam Coen.
Let's rewind a bit. Earlier in the week, Saleh accused Coen and the Jaguars of legally stealing signs, noting, the Jaguars have a "legally, a really advanced signal stealing type system where they always find a way to put themselves in an advantageous situation."
Whether Saleh was trying to simply get into the Jags' heads before the game or whatever the idea was here, the Jaguars head coach did not appreciate having his name linked to any sort of sign stealing scandal. After the game when Coen's Jags got the better of Saleh's 49ers, the two men were seen exchanging words on the field and needing to be separated. We didn't have any context at the time but apparently Coen told Saleh to "keep [his] name of [Saleh's] mouth."
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about the incident and had quite the candid response despite not seeing what actually went down. Shanahan said, “I didn’t see what happened so I’m not sure, but he [Coen] shouldn’t be so sensitive.”
Kyle Shanahan adds fuel to the Robert Saleh-Liam Coen drama
Shanahan admitted that he didn't see the exchange but didn't hesitate to call out Coen for being "so sensitive". It's good to see Shanahan have his defensive coordinator's back in this situation when he could have just said "Hey I didn't see what happened" and ask for the next question.
Unfortunately for all of us enjoying the drama, these teams will only meet again this season if it's in the Super Bowl and that feels a bit unlikely. Hey, both squads are 3-1 though so maybe it's not the craziest scenario.
Even with this game being over, it doesn't feel like we've heard the end of this drama.
