John Lynch's latest 49ers trade-deadline comments serve as clever smokescreen

Even if that's not how he necessarily intended them.

With the San Francisco 49ers 6-0 while also dealing with a rash of injuries, it creates a perfect storm to call for trades. There are clear holes to address, and general manager John Lynch appeared on KNBR on Thursday and was asked about potential trades.

His answer might frustrate some fans, but it also served as a clever smokescreen even if that’s not how Lynch intended it.

Harrison Rich of the San Francisco Chronicle transcribed some of Lynch’s answers on social media, and Lynch said the following:

“We’re gonna get some things to feel like acquisitions with guys just getting healthy and then we’ll continue to monitor the rest of the league. But right now we’re focused on what’s here.”

Lynch makes a great point that the Niners will be getting guys back soon. Whether it’s Christian Kirk, Demarcus Robinson, or Nick Bosa, their respective returns will give the Niners a key boost.

Still, for those who want San Francisco to do everything within its power to win a Super Bowl, that answer may feel somewhat lacking.

The nice thing is that it can be assumed Lynch is playing things at least somewhat close to the vest. He’s not just going to go on the radio and declare the 49ers desperately need a wide receiver because that gives other teams more leverage and will embolden them to ask for more in trade talks.

49ers should get bodies back soon, but they may need more

Plus, if the 49ers do get Robinson, Deebo Samuel, Kirk, and Mike Evans all healthy after the bye week, then they are in pretty good shape at wide receiver and may not feel the need to make a move, especially if they’re counting on rookie De’Zhaun Stribling to come back at some point.

That would be a bit of a dangerous risk to take, though, because to assume all of those guys will stay healthy the rest of the season is probably wishful thinking, just in general for any NFL team, but especially when one considers how banged up the 49ers are perpetually.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be a massive name like Garrett Wilson, even though that would be awesome, but if they can just get a solid veteran who can be relied upon especially if other guys go down, then that could go a long way towards giving San Francisco the depth it needs to make a run.

Lynch isn't tipping his hand, though, so it remains to be seen how the 49ers will handle things.
