The San Francisco 49ers were mostly quiet during the NFL trade deadline, but Deebo Samuel was worried that wasn't going to stay the case as the deadline inched closer.
Samuel, whom the Niners signed to an extension in the summer of 2022, relived a funny story that happened with general manager John Lynch.
Samuel told the story during an appearance on Cleats and Convos, mentioning how Lynch had the nerve to call him hours before the deadline. Samuel was filming a "My Cause, My Cleats" commercial when San Francisco's GM gave him a phone.
This would freak anyone out considering the deadline was mere hours away, and Samuel might have thought he was getting shipped off to another team. He pondered why Lynch would be calling him ahead of the deadline, saying, "I answer the phone, he's like 'Yeah, man, my daughter's going to be the one running the NFL commercial that you're doing today.' I'm like 'Don't be calling me.' ... I don't think he was actually thinking about the time he was calling me. I looked down at my phone like 'Why is this man calling me right now?'"
Deebo Samuel was worried he was about to be traded
The Niners did not end up trading Samuel and remained relatively quiet during the trade deadline. They added Khalil Davis to help shore up their defensive line rotation, but otherwise, it was a quiet trade deadline for San Francisco, which in the past, has not shied away from making big moves.
Two years ago, the 49ers hit a grand slam when they traded for Christian McCaffrey, and last year they bet on being able to fix Chase Young, who had been struggling in Washington.
This year, however, the Niners stayed quiet and that included keeping Samuel in the gold and scarlet.
Samuel has 24 catches for 406 yards and one touchdown through seven games this year. It'd have been massive news if the Niners traded him considering what a star he is.
Thankfully, Lynch was only calling his wide receiver to tell him that his daughter was the one in charge of the commercial Samuel was at.
Had the 49ers traded Samuel, that'd have sent shockwaves through the NFL but fortunately, we don't have to talk about that today.
