While the debates over what the San Francisco 49ers should do with quarterback Brock Purdy rage on the internet, the greatest Niners quarterback of all time, Joe Montana, made it very clear how San Francisco should handle Purdy.

In a recent interview, Montana said the 49ers need to pay Purdy and give him a contract extension.

"You gotta pay him," Montana said. "I can show you fpur or five guys in the league making tons of money that haven’t produced anywhere near what he’s been able to do. They just had one of those years where guys were getting hurt offensively and defensively, craziness in the beginning of the year with talking trades with the wide receiver and then he gets hurt. They just had one of those years where you can’t wait to get it behind you."

Montana went on to reiterate comments he made in another interview about Purdy and the 49ers trying to force things on offense. He believes that as the year went on, head coach Kyle Shanahan was trying to force the ball down the field too much which goes against what his team typically does on offense.

Despite this, it is clear Montana thinks Purdy is the guy for San Francisco going forward.

While there are prognosticators out there who believe the 49ers should not give Purdy an extension and should make him play the final year of his rookie deal without an extension, I think many would be more willing to trust the judgment of a four-time Super Bowl champion and three-time Super Bowl MVP when it comes to what San Francisco should do with Purdy.

Purdy definitely took a bit of a dtep back in 2024, but as Montana said a lot of that can be attributed to the injuries the team sustained as well as the emotional drain and Super Bowl hangover the team had to deal with after yet another heartbreaking loss.

Purdy has still proven enough to the 49ers how good he can be at his best, so they would be foolish to play around and not extend him this offseason.

When the greatest 49ers signal caller talks, people should listen which is why the Niners would be wise to heed Montana's advice and pay Purdy.
