Raise your hand if you wanted to see now-Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo square off against his former employer, the San Francisco 49ers, when the two NFC West rivals take the field in Week 5 this upcoming season.
That's probably most of you, if not all of you.
The chances of this happening appeared real not long ago, seeing L.A.'s starting signal-caller, Matthew Stafford, has been absent from training camp practices while he rehabilitates a back injury, one that could utimately cut into the regular season.
If that ends up being the case, Jimmy G is back under center in a starter's capacity, and that opened up the door for a Garoppolo-versus-Niners showdown on Thursday Night Football at SoFI Stadium on Oct. 2.
Los Angeles, intentionally or not, has been vague about Stafford's recovery and availability up to this point.
However, the latest updates from Rams head coach Sean McVay point to the opportunity for Garoppolo to square off against San Francisco as, well... not likely.
Matthew Stafford reported to return soon for Rams, quelling thoughts of Jimmy Garoppolo facing 49ers
Speaking to reporters in advance of Los Angeles' exhibition opener against the Dallas Cowboys this Saturday, McVay revealed the strong likelihood of Stafford being cleared and resuming on-field activities as soon as the following Monday:

The coach declared Stafford wouldn't participate in scrimmages and joint practices, and there's still plenty of room for setbacks and caution between now and the Rams' preseason opener against the Houston Texans.
But, judging by the sound of it, all signs are pointing to Stafford being back in the fold by the time the regular season rolls around.
That, of course, would mean Garoppolo is relegated back to QB2 on L.A.'s depth chart. And while he'd physically be present to greet many of his former 49ers teammates in Week 5, barring another injury and/or setback to Stafford, Jimmy G actually seeing meaningful snaps against the Niners is looking more and more like a pipedream.
Oh well.
