The San Francisco 49ers are 6-0 on the season and look to be one of the best teams in the NFL right now.
While that’s cause for celebration, owner Jed York’s six-game suspension is now up, which means he can be around the team once again.
York reportedly attended a NFL owners meeting earlier this week. One can only hope he has the good sense to stay away from the team during this time, especially after he disgraced himself with his arrest during an undercover prostitution sting back in August.
It was an embarrassing episode for York and the franchise, but he’s served his time and is able to resume the role he played prior to the whole debacle.
He really shouldn’t be around the team publicly, though, for quite some time.
Jed York still needs to stay as quiet as possible amid 49ers success
It almost feels like a bad omen York has returned. The Niners are 6-0 and have a sizable lead in the NFC West. There’s a decent chance they will be the No. 1 seed in the NFC, which means they would earn a first-round bye.
Part of it is surprising that York would go to the owner meeting. Why not let team CEO Al Guido, who is basically York’s right-hand man and is a more than capable communicator, serve as a proxy like he did a few months ago?
Maybe it’s just superstition or a reflexive distaste for York, but him coming back into the fold right when the 49ers are riding high just feels like it could have some sort of bad mojo for the team going forward.
It is remarkable and worth reminding ourselves just how crazy things were for the Niners a few months ago. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a major car accident in July, and then in August, the owner of the team gets busted in a prostitution sting.
For any other franchise, these would be major events that would have threatened to mess up the vibes ahead of a season. But you wouldn’t even know that either of those things had occurred, based on the early results.
There’s still a long way to go this season and plenty of potential drama could unfold, but let’s just hope York has the good sense to remain in the shadows and stay away from the team for now. Maybe if the Niners are fortunate enough to win the Super Bowl, he can come out and hold the Lombardi Trophy, but before then, we truly shouldn’t hear from the guy.
