The idea of 49ers landing Aaron Rodgers this offseason is wholly ludicrous

The Niners' betting odds for signing Aaron Rodgers are shockingly high.

Yes, Aaron Rodgers to the 49ers is actually a talking point this offseason in light of his time with the Jets coming to an end.

On Super Bowl Sunday, Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported the New York Jets had informed veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers he wasn't going to be part of their future after two forgettable years in the Big Apple.

The 41-year-old future Hall of Famer will soon be a free agent, potentially with a post-June 1 designated release, meaning he can sign anywhere at the start of the league new year, provided the Northern California native opts not to retire.

While most San Francisco 49ers fans have relished watching Rodgers fall to the Niners in the playoffs on a seemingly regular basis, there's inevitably going to be talk about him potentially signing with his boyhood team.

And, no. We're not making this up simply to drive the narrative. It's already out there.

Aaron Rodgers' odds of signing with 49ers will surprise you

According to the oddsmakers over at DraftKings, San Francisco's betting odds to ink Rodgers this offseason are +350.

Only the Pittsburgh Steelers (+200) and Las Vegas Raiders (+300) are higher.

  • Pittsburgh Steelers (+200)
  • Las Vegas Raiders (+300)
  • San Francisco 49ers (+350)
  • Minnesota Vikings (+400)
  • Indianapolis Colts (+650)

With the 49ers boasting the third-best odds to sign the four-time MVP, it's impossible to ignore the noise of it being a possibility no matter how seemingly laughable it is.

Aaron Rodgers to 49ers makes precisely zero sense

Fans can argue all day whether or not the Niners' current starter, Brock Purdy, is worth a market-setting contract extension. But, the fact of the matter is he's still under contract through 2025, and barring a blockbuster trade by San Francisco, Purdy remains the guy under center.

Add on 49ers CEO Jed York's latest comments about wanting "Brock here for a long time," and it seems even more ludicrous the Niners would even sniff the idea of going after a declining player in Rodgers:

But there's another massive wrinkle that spoils the notion of San Francisco being in play.

Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, Rodgers' former head coach in New York.

Saleh, whose midseason firing by the Jets may or may not have been influenced by Rodgers, was nevertheless at odds with his quarterback at various points over the last two years. The absolute last thing Saleh would want to see during his reunion with the 49ers would be another reunion with Rodgers.

Plus, with Saleh reportedly having a say in the Niners' roster-creation plans this offseason, one of the best ways San Francisco could disgruntle its defensive coordinator would be to court Rodgers.

Would anyone actually think the 49ers would want to go down that path after tenuously wooing Saleh back into their own ranks?

No.
