Ian Rapoport poured cold water on Christian McCaffrey injury conspiracy theory

It's a good thing... or a bad thing. Maybe.

Earlier this week, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio created a little bit of buzz by suggesting San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey was holding himself out of camp practices with a minor injury ("tightness") in order to squeeze some cash out from his employer.

It was a sound theory, especially considering McCaffrey has zero in guaranteed money on his current deal, and in light of two major deals for running backs—Atlanta Falcons' Bijan Robinson and the Detroit Lions' Jaymyr Gibbs—CMC could, at least theoretically, look to secure more of a bag now that he's on the wrong side of 30 years old.

However, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport isn't having it.

Instead of supporting Florio's claim that McCaffrey's situation is more contractual, Rapoport is simplifying it, stating the tailback's week-long absence from practice is actually injury-related.

Ian Rapoport: Christian McCaffrey is actually dealing with 'tightness'

Speaking on The Insiders, Rapoport shot down any notion of McCaffrey using the injury to hold out for more money:

"This is not fake," Rapoport said. "Actual tightness, not fake tightness, not a hold-in, actual tightness. It does not seem to me like anything really to worry about. I know we've heard that before with Christian McCaffrey, but for real, this does not seem like anything to worry about.

"The timing of this, coming right after Jaymyr Gibbs, right after Bijan Robinson got paid, my understanding, coincidence. Christian McCaffrey should be fine."

Now, that certainly simplifies things from a contractual standpoint, although Rapoport suggested there may have been "check-ins" about more guaranteed cash and/or an extension. But those didn't go anywhere, per his report.

Christian McCaffrey's injury appears to be nothing major

Included in the NFL insider's report above is the portion about McCaffrey's injury itself. While "tightness" isn't overly descriptive, Rapoport didn't feel it was a major concern.

Although there's still room for worry, especially in light of the fact a similar development took place during training camp back in 2024 when CMC was dealing with an apparently minor injury, only to be subsequently reported as tendinitis that led to him appearing in a mere four games that season.

Rapoport acknowledged that, though, which should alleviate plenty of concern.

And it isn't as if McCaffrey has anything to prove in camp. He's the Niners' No. 1 offensive bell cow, although that can cut both ways with the understanding that any long-term injury could be fully disastrous to San Francisco's playoff aspirations.

Fortunately, at least at this point, Rapoport doesn't feel as if that's part of the equation.
