Gabe Davis release proves 49ers aren't the only team wanting to erase Trent Baalke

The Jags are now trying to do what the Niners did years ago.

The 49ers can join hands with the Jaguars for their mutual distaste for former general manager Trent Baalke.

In a not-so-surprising move, the Jacksonville Jaguars released veteran wide receiver Gabe Davis just one year into a three-year, $39 million free-agent contract signed a year ago.

News of the transaction was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter on Wednesday.

By doing so, the Jags pulled the plug on yet another pickup from infamous general manager Trent Baalke, an executive all too familiar with San Francisco 49ers fans.

Baalke, who clashed with then-Niners head coach Jim Harbaugh between 2011 and 2014 before subsequently overseeing the team's demise the two years that followed Harbaugh's tenure, didn't earn any fans in the Bay Area. Yet he nevertheless assumed the same role down in Duval.

Not surprisingly, Jacksonville experienced many of the same roster issues Baalke helped create in San Francisco. After the Jaguars opted to clean house after yet another frustrating 2024 campaign, albeit in an unorthodox fashion, Baalke found himself out of the job yet again.

And the Jags can't erase Baalke's memory fast enough, as was the case with the 49ers back in 2017 when then-new general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan turned over nearly 70 percent of the inherited roster.

49ers fans can empathize with Jaguars fans regarding Trent Baalke

On the surface, the Davis pickup made sense for Baalke a year ago. The receiver flirted with 1,000-yard campaigns during his previous two years with the Buffalo Bills, and Jacksonville needed to find additional weaponry to fully unlock quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

But Davis ultimately flopped, catching just 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns over an injury-plagued 2024 campaign that saw him appear in only 10 games.

It was yet another free agency whiff by Baalke, of which he had a few back during his Niners tenure.

Davis is merely the latest in a long line of such whiffs, many of which convinced both San Francisco and Jacksonville's front offices to part ways with him.

The 49ers ultimately cleaned up the mess. Now, it's the Jaguars' turn to do so (and they're currently doing just that).
