The biggest name on the San Francisco 49ers' transaction wire on June 3 was the official addition of former Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Bryce Huff, whose trade finally went through after passing a physical.
Of course, the Niners had to figure out how to make room for defensive coordinator Robert Saleh's former understudy with the New York Jets.
But, that wouldn't be too hard. Right?
In fact, San Francisco removed two players from the 90-man roster: offensive lineman Nicholas Petit-Frere and wide receiver Trent Taylor.
Taylor ended up on injured reserve with an injury the team didn't disclose on its website. Considering he spent all but two games in 2024 on the 49ers practice squad, it's hard envisioning this transaction having much of a dent aside from cutting into the Niners' offseason competition for a punt-return job.
Petit-Frere, whom San Francisco signed as free agent earlier this offseason, ended up being waived, effectively to make room for Huff.
With Taylor going to IR, the 49ers subsequently signed wide receiver Malik Knowles, a 6-foot-2 option who entered the league in 2023 as an undrafted free-agent pickup of the Minnesota Vikings.
Of Knowles, the 49ers' official website posted:
"A 24-year-old native of Mansfield, TX, Knowles attended Kansas State University (2018-22) where he appeared in 51 games (39 starts) and totaled 127 receptions for 1,867 yards and 14 touchdowns through the air to go along with 36 carries for 440 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. He earned Second-Team All-Big 12 in 2021."
As for Taylor, landing on injured reserve prior to the regular season beginning means his 2025 campaign is already over. Offseason IR designations dictate as much, and the rules are different for in-season IR cases.
It's too bad for Taylor, one of head coach Kyle Shanahan's first picks from way back in the 2017 NFL Draft who had an impressive rookie season but dealt with injuries and setbacks in the years since.
