2 free-agent reunions that would make sense for 49ers (and 2 that would not)

Any reunions in the cards?

The San Francisco 49ers have probably made all of the major free-agent additions they’re going to make this offseason, but there are still a number of familiar faces who remain available in free agency.

While a reunion with any of these players is fairly unlikely, there are two former Niners who would make sense as candidates to return to the red and gold, while two just wouldn’t make much sense at all.

2 reunions 49ers should entertain

OL Daniel Brunskill

Left guard is the big position the Niners need to figure out ahead of the regular season. They will likely have a competition among players like Carver Willis, Connor Colby, and Brett Toth, but there is room for another guy in the mix.

Offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill played for the 49ers from 2019 to 2022. He was used as a tackle, guard, and even a center during his time in San Francisco, so he can be moved around as needed.

Last season with the Miami Dolphins, head coach Mike McDaniel even utilized Brunskill as a blocking tight end, so he is something of a Swiss Army knife when it comes to blocking.

Brunskill probably wouldn’t be San Francisco's starter at left guard, but it wouldn't hurt to have him around as a solid depth piece. Plus, if Aaron Donald does actually return for the Los Angeles Rams, Brunskill was one of the few Niners who could stop him, so it may be worth giving him a call.

WR Trent Taylor

Somehow, wide receiver Trent Taylor has hung around on the roster for a while. It’s easy to forget he’s even on the team, but he hung around on the practice squad in 2024 and then spent 2025 on IR but was still a key part of the team’s social gatherings.

Taylor almost certainly won’t see playing time next year, since the Niners already have so many wide receivers, but he’s a nice guy to have around on the practice squad since he is a veteran and has returned punts. So if they need him in an emergency, he’s there.

2 ex-49ers team should steer clear of

RB Raheem Mostert

Now let’s turn to two players who do not make sense for a reunion.

Running back Raheem Mostert became an elite running back with the 49ers back in 2019, but injuries derailed his tenure. He ended up going to the Dolphins and having a lot of success.

Now, he’s fairly washed up after a bad year with the Las Vegas Raiders. He had just 104 rushing yards on the year, and at the age of 34, it’s questionable how much he has left in his legs. The Niners would be better served going with Jordan James and Kaelon Black as backups next season.

S Jimmie Ward

While safety could still be considered a position of need for the 49ers, they should not reunite with Jimmie Ward. He hasn’t played since 2024 and has had some very troubling legal accusations made against him, so San Francisco would be wise to steer clear.

It’s only natural to think about reunions with former players, but only a few guys available would actually make sense to come back to the Niners.
