Fred Warner, Trent Williams share opposite perspectives on 49ers' Super Bowl losses

Both are valid.

The San Francisco 49ers have experienced their fair share of Super Bowl heartbreak this decade. They have lost two Super Bowls to the Kansas City Chiefs since 2020, and two of the Niners' stars, linebacker Fred Warner and left tackle Trent Williams, shared differing views on what it is like to lose a Super Bowl.

Williams was asked about losing the Super Bowl and said, "I tell people all the time, I’d rather not go than go and lose, because the pain of losing lasts for months."

Meanwhile, Warner has a different view as a guy who has lost two Super Bowls with the Niners while Williams was only there for the more recent loss, "They both sucked, but here’s the thing, I would never take it back... I’ll go back and I’ll lose two more. I don’t care. I’m not afraid of losing Super Bowls. It’s more meaningful to have been there and played in it."

It's interesting to get two totally different perspectives from two of San Francisco's most important players. Both viewpoints are valid, and fans surely have their own perspective because they have seen the 49ers lose Super Bowls and NFC Championship games in recent memory.

Whenever a team gets that deep in the playoffs, a loss stings. Even losing the NFC Championship game is brutal because the team was right on the precipice of having a chance to win it all but came up just short.

There is something to be said for a team losing in the Super Bowl being worse for the next season. The 49ers lost the Super Bowl to KC in 2020 and 2024, and they went on to have an awful following season both times in part because the team was clearly burnt out and hadn't fully recovered from the loss.

Meanwhile, the Niners teams that lost in the NFC Championship in 2022 and 2023 went on to have strong seasons the following year because they were right there the year prior and had something to strive for. Losing the Super Bowl just takes so much out of a team, physically and emotionally.

But Warner is right that for a player to say they played in a Super Bowl is a big deal. Not every player gets that chance, and if they aren't willing to put themselves out there, knowing they could get humiliated on the biggest stage imaginable, then they will never have a shot at ultimate glory.

One hopes that Warner can recover fully from his injury and the Niners can figure out Williams' contract situation so they can come back next season and actually win a Super Bowl.
