The context around him has changed a lot.

Fans would be forgiven if they forgot defensive back Derrick Canteen was on the San Francisco 49ers offseason roster.

Aside from having a unique surname that may remind some of camping/hiking equipment, not much can be said of Canteen's inaugural year at the pro level. After going undrafted in 2025 out of the University of Cincinnati, the 5-foot-11 defensive back subsequently spent his rookie season on the Niners practice squad before inking a reserve/futures contract last January.

A lot has changed since then, though.

San Francisco welcomed in new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris during the offseason, which could bode well for Canteen, given how Morris is more associated with defensive backs than his predecessor, now-Tennessee Titans head coach Robert Saleh.

Should Morris see something in Canteen that's worth developing, it could be a fast-track opportunity to jump from a practice squad-at-best outcome to a potential spot on the regular-season roster.

Derrick Canteen has notably better shot at 49ers roster in Year 2

The 49ers cleaned out their defensive backfield a bit during the offseason, bidding farewell to veterans like Jason Pinnock and Chase Lucas, thereby freeing up some spots for other depth options on the 90-man offseason crop of players. True, adding rookies like cornerback Ephesians Prysock and Jalen Stroman last April partially offset the losses, but it's still a better situation for Canteen overall.

Plus, working in Canteen's favor is the fact he was a fairly versatile defensive back in college, capable of serving as both a nickel cornerback and a safety, and having positional flexibility is always going to be a likable factor in determining which players round out a depth chart.

Scond-year pro Upton Stout is already penned in as the Niners' starting nickel, while Ji'Ayir Brown and Malik Mustapha are poised to start at safety. Marques Sigle is a candidate to start at safety, too, while veteran Siran Neal boasts strong special teams prowess to keep him high on the list.

But, as a potential final addition to the defensive backfield's depth chart, Canteen has to be squarely in consideration as he enters year two.

Especially if he receives a coveted vote of confidence from Morris.
