5 ex-49ers from 2025 still linger in free agency after Jauan Jennings signs

When will these guys get signed?

At long last, wide receiver Jauan Jennings was signed by the Minnesota Vikings. San Francisco 49ers fans will miss him for the gritty way he played the game, but it was clear after the Niners added Mike Evans and Christian Kirk in free agency, and then drafted De’Zhaun Stribling, there was no longer room for him.

Jennings was far from the only 49er who played for the team last season who remains unsigned.

These five players from 2025 also don’t have a team as they linger in free agency.

Yetur Gross-Matos

The Niners signed edge rusher Yetur Gross-Matos ahead of the 2024 season hoping he could be a nice depth piece. He was injured both seasons quite a bit and had four sacks in 2024, but his most memorable moment as a Niner was probably failing to secure a fumble against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 17 of last season, which could have shifted the momentum of the game.

Don’t expect him to reunite with the Niners since San Francisco drafted an edge rusher in Romello Height and already have Mykel Williams and Keion White, too.

Kevin Givens

The 49ers had Kevin Givens on the roster since 2019. He was signed as an undrafted free agent and has been a solid depth piece for years.

He’s been banged up the last two seasons, so the Niners are probably content to move on, especially since they will probably roll with Osa Odighizuwa, Alfred Collins, CJ West, and Gracen Halton at defensive tackle.

Trent Taylor

The 49ers drafted wide receiver Trent Taylor in the first year of the Kyle Shanahan-John Lynch regime, and he looked like a nifty slot receiver. Yet injuries limited him, and he bounced around from team to team before coming back to San Francisco in 2024 as a practice squad player.

He was with the Niners last year, although he was injured. He still hangs out with a lot of the key players on the team, so maybe they will keep him around just for fun.

Thomas Morstead

While veteran punter Thomas Morstead was solid for the Niners in 2025, San Francisco decided it would go a different direction by signing Corliss Waitman.

Morstead is age 40, so he could retire. But maybe a team will call and convince him to punt for another season.

Eric Kendricks

Somehow, veteran linebacker Eric Kendricks remained unsigned deep into last season. The Niners were able to scoop him up after losing linebacker after linebacker to injury, and he actually had some big performances for San Francisco, including in the playoffs against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Niners are overstuffed with linebackers as it is, so a reunion with Kendricks is probably not in the cards.

San Francisco is probably pretty set and likely won’t make too many more free-agent additions, so don't expect a reunion with any of these players.
