The San Francisco 49ers have already been linked to several still-available free agents with just days remaining before training camp kicks off.
Just don't expect general manager John Lynch to get on the phone and call any of them anytime soon.
True, the Niners boast a league-high $71.5 million in salary cap space, according to Over the Cap, and it's fair to wonder why Lynch and Co. would be hesitant to use it while San Francisco's Super Bowl window remains open. But, with some serious cap crunching needed in 2027 and 2028, the desire to roll as much over all but eliminates any major transactions between now and Week 1.
But there's more beyond the 49ers not likely grabbing a well-known free agent or two between now and the regular season.
Don't expect 49ers to sign any big-name free agents soon
There are several well-known names on the open market. Wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Stefon Diggs, defensive ends Jadeveon Clowney and Joey Bosa, offensive guard Kevin Zeitler and safety Xavier Woods are just some of the still-available names who could ultimately beef up the Niners roster.
Yet San Francisco probably steers clear at this point.
The 49ers are in an interesting spot. Their roster, as it's currently constructed, is largely topheavy with plenty of veterans securing the first-team gigs, backed up largely by relatively unproven youngsters. It might actually be a wise strategy, as Lynch looks at a gradual shift from that older core to his younger group.
But, until Lynch has some evidence for how those younger players are delivering, there'd be no need to muddy the transition with another free agent or two. Lynch and the coaching staff will want to see what they have first, then decide whether or not to make any moves.
And that process might not even trigger anything until well into the regular season, perhaps as late as the NFL trade deadline later this fall where Lynch and the Niners have typically been more active.
So, for those getting hopeful about San Francisco adding someone at the 11th hour before camp, it might be best to curb that enthusiasm.
