One of the biggest offseason questions for the San Francisco 49ers will be what to do with backup quarterback Mac Jones.
There will surely be suitors for him, and the Miami Dolphins can be added to that list after reportedly promoting Bobby Slowik to offensive coordinator.
Slowik was with the Niners as an assistant coach from 2017 to 2022 until he was poached by departing defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, who made Slowik the offensive coordinator of the Houston Texans.
After being fired by Houston, Slowik landed with Mike McDaniel in Miami and has now been promoted to offensive coordinator after the Dolphins dismissed McDaniel.
Slowik understands the DNA of the offense Kyle Shanahan runs, so he figures to run a similar offense to the one in San Francisco. That means Miami will need a quarterback who can thrive in that Shanahan-style system which is exactly what Jones proved he can do in 2025.
Dolphins seem to be a perfect trade suitor for Mac Jones now
With the Niners this season, Jones went 5-3 in games he started and threw for 2,151 yards while completing 69.6 perfect of his passes. He also threw 13 touchdown passes and had six interceptions.
There is no way the 49ers end up winning 12 games in the regular season without the great performance by Jones. He showed that he is more than worthy of being a starter in the NFL and just might get his shot with the Dolphins.
Miami made it clear it'll move on from Tua Tagovailoa. He has struggled in recent seasons and was benched at the end of the regular season in favor of Quinn Ewers, so the writing is on the wall.
Perhaps the Dolphins look to draft another quarterback, or maybe they will make an aggressive push for Jones in the offseason. Would they rather burn a first-round pick on a signal-caller, or would they rather trade a second- or third-round pick to San Francisco in exchange for Jones?
The Niners have pretty firmly said they do not plan on shopping Jones this offseason, but if they get an offer they cannot refuse, especially with so many other needs to address like edge rusher and wide receiver, they might not be able to afford turning it down.
Miami would make a lot of sense as a landing spot for Jones, so don't be surprised if there are some rumors linking the two sides this offseason.
