Coming into the 2026 NFL season, it was fair to wonder what version of Deebo Samuel the San Francisco 49ers were going to get. After just one week, Samuel showed that he is going to have an impact in many different ways this season.
Samuel had six catches for 48 yards and a touchdown, one carry for 12 yards, and a 45-yard kick return to start the second half, which set the tone for an absolutely dominant team performance in the final 30 minutes of play.
This type of Swiss Army performance is reminiscent of a 2023 version of Deebo that fans so fondly remember. If he can continue such production, it would go a long way in alleviating pressure off the rest of the offense.
His ability to take carries from the backfield takes some of the load off Christian McCaffrey and Kaelon Black.His ability to catch passes in space means less wear and tear on Mike Evans. It could also create more opportunities for the future Hall of Famer if Deebo is able to draw some added defensive attention.
Of course, any help in the return game is a bonus, but it wouldn’t come as a major shock if he had a few more big returns. It could help shift the momentum of games, and maybe he could even become the first 49er since 2018 to take a kickoff return to the house for a touchdown.
Deebo Samuel is rewriting the ending to his 49ers career
This just seems to be a hungrier version of Samuel from the last time he was seen in a 49ers uniform. He clearly wanted something different towards the end of his first stint in San Francisco, which is why he wanted to be traded, but now he’s a guy with something to prove rather than a veteran who hadn’t quite lived up to contractual expectations.
The 2026 Deebo Samuel seems to be a little more selfless and a little more willing to do whatever it takes to win. He seems to be in phenomenal shape and has a motivation to prove himself yet again.
Only time will tell if this newfound gusto lasts, however. At 30 years old, there is always the possibility of the veteran accumulating too many bumps and bruises to remain effective, but after Week 1, he is exactly what the Niners were betting on. Hopefully this was just a taste of what he has to offer this season.
