So far in his career, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has struggled to enter the threshold of elite signal-callers. Despite being proficient in nearly every statistical category, he has yet to establish himself as a top-tier QB in the eyes of NFL pundits.
The impending season, though, may change that narrative. Widely predicted to have his best season to date, the gunslinger has a key advantage that no other quarterback in the NFL can claim.
Purdy's secret upper hand was on full display in Sunday's practice when he and linebacker Fred Warner went head-to-head in a chess match of two elite football minds. Each player bested the other at one point in time, and it culminated in a slew of chatter after each play.
In short, Warner got the best out of Purdy - again.
Brock Purdy has to practice against the league's best - and smartest
Brock Purdy has the privilege of practicing against arguably one of, if not the sharpest, defensive minds in the game today. Earlier this summer, Warner was rated as the NFL's best linebacker, specifically cited for his processing speed and ability to expertly dissect opposing offenses. The All-Pro captain is coming off a season-ending injury, making the ranking all the more impressive. He is still viewed as the epitome of linebacking mastery, and, frankly, it might not be particularly close.
Warner serves as the 49ers' glorified point guard on defense. It must be maddening to play against such a unique combination of intellect and physical prowess. Purdy has clearly benefited from the matchup, evidenced by Sunday's competitive repartee. Warner's keen intellect undoubtedly forces Purdy to speed up his own processing, thus making his practices an even tougher test than games.
One thing is certain: if ESPN's ranking is correct, Purdy will not have to play against a better linebacker this season.
Now in his fifth year in Kyle Shanahan's offense, Brock Purdy looks poised to reach a new level. With shiny new weapons to throw to and a willingness to stand up to the NFL's best defenders, the sky is the limit for the former Iowa State man. This may be the year he breaks into elite QB conversations. Come this time next year, critics could be talking about the franchise quarterback in an entirely new light.
